Scholarship, fellowship, and award recipients in The Hugh Downs School of Human Communication were guests of honor on April 30 in the Heritage Room of the University Club on the Tempe campus. Scholarship donors Hugh and Ruth Downs, Kristin Bervig Valentine, Christine Muldoon, Neal and Janet Palmer, and Mary Morrison were there to share in the celebration along with the award winners, their families, and faculty.
Undergraduate Scholarships
Several merit-based scholarships were awarded to Hugh Downs School undergraduate students:
Michelle Nicole Vered was awarded the Robert & Sue Karatz Forensics Endowed Scholarship. All students with at least a 3.0 ASU GPA who are members of the Forensics Team are considered for this scholarship.
Yiying Long was awarded the Alexander and Vivian Gentleman Endowed Scholarship in Communication.
John Garrett Stinogel was awarded the Louis & Louise Menk Endowed Scholarship. Haleigh Victoria Kratz was awarded the Rusty and Rosie Lyon Endowed Scholarship.
The Hugh Downs School of Human Communication Scholars Program scholarship was awarded to Katelin Anne Hodson. Jimmy Bunn was also awarded the Hugh Downs School of Human Communication Scholars Program scholarship but was not able to be present at the reception.
The inaugural Norman K. Perrill Scholarship was awarded to Martha Kay Kenney.
Mimi Claire Ringness and Daniel James Lennie were awarded The Kristin Bervig Valentine Undergraduate Scholarships in Performance Studies. This scholarship has been awarded annually since 2000 to undergraduate students who excel in performance studies communication classes and who made significant contributions to the study of performance through creative activity, scholarship and/or community service.
Cami Samuels was awarded the Dean’s Medal. The medal was created by Robert E. Page, Jr., dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, to recognize the top graduating student in each of the degree-granting schools and departments in the college.”
Although they were not able to be present at the awards reception, the following students were also recognized: Angelica Caroline Perez was awarded the House of Broadcasting Inc. Endowment Scholarship, Carl Richard Combs was awarded the William & Teeny Drakos Endowed Scholarship, and Andrew Michael Taylor was awarded the Barnes Pharr Scholarship.
Graduate Fellowships and Awards
Gladys Muasya and Lauren Amaro were each awarded a Jeanne Lind Herberger Fellowship for their contributions to both conflict and work-life issues.
Mark Generous was awarded the Christine Duff Muldoon Communication Fellowship. The recipient of this award must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and will likely make important contributions to the communication discipline.
Roberta Chevrette was awarded The Hugh Downs School of Human Communication Outstanding PhD Student Research Award. Keri Fehrenbach was awarded The Hugh Downs School of Human Communication Superior PhD Student Research Award.
Margaret Brooks was awarded the Hugh Downs School of Human Communication Ph.D. Student Service Award in recognition of her excellent and sustained contributions to the Hugh Downs School, the University, and the communication discipline.
Tara Hack was awarded The Hugh Downs School of Human Communication Outstanding Ph.D Student Teaching Award. Tara is also a two-time recipient of the 2012-2013 Graduate and Professional Student Association Teaching Excellence Award.
Suzanne Pullen was awarded The Hugh Downs School of Human Communication Ph.D. Public Scholarship & Engagement Award in recognition of her ability to integrate her research interests with her interest in helping the community. Suzanne Pullen was also awarded the Dessie E. Larsen Graduate Fellowship. This fellowship provides support for an outstanding graduate student with the potential for great success in performance studies.
The Award for Sustained Innovation in Creative Activity was awarded to Lou Clark for her involvement in a wide range of activities and learning in creative nonfiction, performance, civil dialogue, pedagogy, and elaboration of original material and scholarship.
Associate Professor Anthony Roberto and visiting Professor Kathy Miller received Outstanding Faculty Awards from the Hugh Downs School Graduate and Professional Student Association.

The Jeanne Lind Herberger Professorship in Communication was awarded to Benjamin J. Broome.
