The Application Process:
Do I need to have an internship set up by the application deadline?
No, the application is for admission to the program. Getting an internship approved is a separate process. Apply for admission to the program even if you haven't found an internship yet. The application is available on the Information for Interns page.
When are the application deadlines?
For fall, the deadline is July 15. For spring, the deadline is October 15. For Summer, the deadline is April 15.
Internship Sponsors:
Can I get an internship where I am currently working?
Yes, but your job responsibilities must be different than previously.
Can my internship be paid?
Yes. That is between you and your sponsor. Please note, that federal labor law requires that you make at least minimum wage if you are paid.
Does clerical work (answering phones, making copies, etc.) qualify as an internship?
No. It is the intention of this program to help you gain experience that goes beyond clerical work. Therefore, your internship can consist of no more than 20 percent clerical work.
Out-of-State Internships:
Can I do an internship out-of-state?
Yes. COM 484 is now being offered as an online class. There are no face-to-face class meetings, so you can participate in class activities from wherever your internship is located.
Application and Approval:
I spoke to my advisor and was told that I should qualify for the internship program. Is that all I need to do?
No. You must apply for the program by the specified deadline. Your advisor can help you evaluate whether you meet the basic requirements for the program, but you must complete the application process to be approved for the program. Late applications may not be accepted.
Can I go ahead and finalize an internship before I am approved?
No. If you want to tentatively contact sponsors prior to being approved for the program, you must explain to them that you are not officially admitted to the program. Remember, the internship coordinator is under no obligation to admit you to the program just because you lined up a really great internship. If you do not meet the requirements for the program, you will not be admitted.
