The Application Process
Do I need to have an internship set up by the application deadline?
No, the application is for admission to the program. Getting an internship approved is a separate process. Apply even if you haven’t found an internship yet. The application is available on the Information for Interns page.
When are the application deadlines?
For fall, the deadline is July 15. For spring, October 15. For summer, April 15.
Program Details
Appropriate internships involve applying communication skills in interpersonal, organizational, or public settings. Examples include roles in:
- Marketing
- Public relations
- Human resources
- Group facilitation
- Other professional environments that require strong communication skills

Internship Program Overview
The internship program is open to campus-based students only. ASU Online students may apply for the BIS internship program by contacting the instructor of the BIS 484 course.
Program Details
The internship program has two main components:
The Hugh Downs School of Human Communication offers a dynamic internship program that prepares students to apply their communication skills in real-world settings. Our students intern at companies, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations—often receiving job offers after their experience.
To more fully explain the impact that The Empty Space has had on students, faculty, and the public, we have invited people familiar with the Space to tell their own stories.
