National Scholarships

The Lorraine W. Frank Office of National Scholarship Advisement administered by Barrett, The Honors College helps students apply for national and international awards, including the Rhodes, Fulbright, Marshall, and many more. This office assists any Arizona State University student applying for one of these awards, not exclusively students in Barrett, The Honors College.

 2024-2025 Scholarship Application 

Applicants must be COM majors currently enrolled in classes at ASU and must have established an ASU GPA. (Only Tempe campus-based students are eligible for the Hugh Downs School scholarships.) 

**Exceptions** Any  ASU Tempe-based student with an ASU GPA who meets scholarship-specific criteria can apply for the Kristin Bervig Valentine Scholarship and the Robert and Sue Karatz Forensics Endowed Scholarship.

Jennifer G. Kaplan Endowment Scholarship

Requirements

  • Female undergraduate pursuing a career or studies in public relations
  • Must be a full-time resident of Arizona
  • Must demonstrate financial need as defined by ASU Financial Aid and Scholarship Services
  • Must be a full-time student in the Hugh Downs School for the duration of the award.
  • If no candidate meeting these criteria is identified, the scholarship will be awarded to support a male or female student from Arizona planning to pursue a career or studies in public relations
     

Hugh Downs School of Human Communication Scholars Program

Requirements

  • Minimum 3.0 cumulative ASU GPA
  • Preference for juniors and seniors
  • Must be a full-time student in the Hugh Downs School for the duration of the award
     

Barnes Scholarship Endowment in Communication

(Award split between semesters)

Requirements

  • Minimum 3.5 cumulative ASU GPA
  • Junior/Senior status (during award period)
  • Must be a full-time student for the duration of the award with an emphasis on the major in interpersonal or intercultural communication
     

Alexander and Vivian Gentleman Endowed Scholarship

Requirements

  • Minimum 3.0 ASU GPA
  • Preference to juniors and seniors; however, outstanding freshman and sophomores may be considered
  • Must be a full-time student in the Hugh Downs School for the duration of the award
     

Louis and Louise Menk Endowed Scholarship

Requirements

  • Minimum 3.0 cumulative ASU GPA
  • Preference to juniors and seniors; however, outstanding freshman and sophomores may be considered
  • Must be a full-time student in the Hugh Downs School for the duration of the award
     

Robert and Sue Karatz Forensics Endowed Scholarship

Requirements

  • Minimum 3.0 ASU GPA
  • Preference to juniors and seniors; however, outstanding freshmen and sophomores may be considered.  All majors with membership on the Forensics team will be considered.
  • Must be a full-time student in any major for the duration of the award
     

Rusty and Rosie Lyon Endowed Scholarship

Requirements

  • Minimum 3.0 cumulative ASU GPA
  • Preference to juniors and seniors; however, outstanding freshmen and sophomores may be considered.
  • Must be a full-time student in the Hugh Downs School for the duration of the award
     

William and Teeny Drakos Endowed Scholarship

Requirements

  • Minimum 3.0 cumulative ASU GPA
  • Preference to juniors and seniors; however, outstanding freshmen and sophomores may be considered.
  • Must be a full-time student in the Hugh Downs School for the duration of the award
     

House of Broadcasting Inc. Endowed Scholarship

Requirements

  • Minimum 3.0 cumulative ASU GPA
  • Preference for scholarship selection shall be given to juniors and seniors; however, outstanding freshman and sophomores may be considered
  • Must be a full-time student in the Hugh Downs School for the duration of the award.
     

Norman K. Perrill Scholarship Endowment for the Hugh Downs School of Human Communication

Requirements

  • The recipient shall be pursuing an academic degree in Group Communication, Organizational Communication, or a related program of study associated with the Center for Strategic Communication
  • Preference is for the recipient to demonstrate special needs such as physical disability, returning to school after a significant absence, a re-dedication to continuing education, or other special circumstance at the discretion of the selection committee
     

Kristin Bervig Valentine Scholarship in Performance Studies

Requirements

  • Minimum 3.0 cumulative ASU GPA
  • A full-time or part-time student pursuing any major or minor enrolled in performance studies classes in the Hugh Downs School and who has made significant contributions to the study of performance through creative activity, scholarship and/or community service

Hugh Downs School Awards and Recognition Ceremony
